Bilingual Secondary School
Grades 5 – 10

Meeting new challenges in a caring setting

You want your child to tackle an academically challenging international curriculum whilst continuing to benefit from strong pastoral care.

Starting out in Secondary School can be a daunting experience but not at accadis ISB. Students meet high academic demands whilst feeling safe in our system where we know each individual.

We are proud of our responsible, welcoming and open-minded students. They are encouraged to mentor younger students, to volunteer and to experience the world of work, especially during the two-week internship in Grade 9 and via participation in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award programme.

Our Language Concept

Bilingual Secondary School

In Secondary School, all students are assigned to a language class in German as well as in English, each of which is tailored to their personal language level.

In the various subject lessons, the students are taught either in German or in English. Hence, the immersion method still plays an important role in the Secondary School.

Lessons in Spanish as a foreign language round off the linguistic spectrum. From Grade 5 onwards, all students learn Spanish, sooner than is customary in Germany.

Learning languages with the immersion method

Subject lessons
An innovative and future-oriented curriculum in the bilingual Secondary School. At its centre remains the joy of learning.

Students in Secondary School enjoy our broad international curriculum which is compatible with the requirements of the State of Hesse. Our students experience the best of both worlds when working towards the ‘Mittlerer Schulabschluss’ at the end of Grade 10: achieving the internationally recognized Cambridge IGCSE qualifications and reaching the standard expected at a German Gymnasium at the same time.

Using technology comes second nature to our students. We provide safe access to the world of online learning through the Google Workspace for Education platform. Students establish their competencies as technology users and creators during their weekly IT lessons in Grades 5 to 8; 3D printing and coding are some of the highlights.

The learning experience is rounded off by a range of personality-building initiatives which the students find enriching. This includes the annual residential class trip. Whether it is an outdoor experience or a city visit, all trips complement the curriculum and strengthen the bond between new and existing students.

Daily schedule

  • All students may enter the school grounds as early as 07:45 hrs. The school day begins at 08:15 hrs in the homeroom, a quarter of an hour spent together in class to share news, get organised and plan the day together. Then the lessons begin.
  • The timetable consists of 7 lessons of 45 minutes each per day.
  • There are regular breaks: a twenty-minute breakfast break, the lunch break (50 minutes) and 5-minute breaks between all other lessons.
  • At 15:15 hrs, our students say goodbye or stay on until 17:00 hrs to take part in the afternoon programme, which can be booked in addition according to individual requirements and interests.

IGCSE
International General Certificate of Secondary Education

We attach great importance to all our students achieving the Mittlerer Schulabschluss as a formal qualification at the end of Grade 10, although almost all our students aspire to continue their schooling in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and to attend university afterwards. With the Mittlere Schulabschluss, many educational paths are already open to the students, e.g. vocational training, which either leads directly to the desired profession or, in the very flexible German education system, to opportunities for further education at university level.

Our students prove their eligibility for the Mittlerer Schulabschluss by passing Cambridge IGCSE-Examinations IGCSE is an abbreviation of ‘International General Certificate of Secondary Education’ and it is a globally recognised programme, designed and administered by Cambridge International Education.

To qualify, the Hessische Kultusministerium specifies the following five subjects::

  • German (as a first or additional language)
  • English
  • International Mathematics
  • Combined Sciences
  • History

Of course, lessons and regular assessments in all other subjects of the accadis curriculum continue as before:

  • Ethics
  • Music
  • Art
  • Physical Education
  • Spanish

Many of our Grade 10 students also choose to sit the Spanish IGCSE examinations as an expression of their enthusiasm for this foreign language and to show evidence of the knowledge they have acquired over the years.

Our students also value the IGCSEs as preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at accadis ISB. In both programmes, the learning phase extends over two school years and the examinations are set and marked by external, independent boards at the end of the two years.
