At accadis International School Bad Homburg, fostering not only academic excellence but also social and personal skills is a top priority. The Domino Day on 29 January 2025, was a perfect example of how teamwork, creativity, and patience can be experienced in a playful yet meaningful way.
A Common Project That Unites
From the first planning steps in the morning to the exciting moment when the dominoes began to fall – the day was defined by collaboration, patience, and the shared goal of creating something truly special. Using 40,000 dominoes, students built intricate chains and creative designs throughout the classrooms and corridors. Some of the most impressive creations included a snake and a colorful firework symbolizing the Chinese New Year, the accadis logo, flags, lettering, and smiley faces. With great patience, they also built impressive towers and walls.
At around 14:00 hrs, the moment had arrived: teachers, school management, administration staff, and students counted down together before birthday boy Sangyun had the honor of setting off the first domino. For 15 minutes and 13 seconds, the entire school community held its breath as the carefully designed structures fell in a spectacular chain reaction.
Learning for Life – Experiencing accadis Values in Action
What made Domino Day special was not only the breathtaking domino course, but also the way students worked together throughout the day. Dr. Stefan Wolkenfeld, Head of Secondary School, described the unique atmosphere:
"What made this day so special was that all doors were open, allowing collaboration across Grade levels. Students and teachers shared ideas, and supported each other. Of course, there were challenges – chains broke, structures had to be rebuilt – but the mindset was always solution-oriented. The atmosphere throughout the school was fantastic."
An example of perseverance and team spirit was Sofia from Grade 11:
"It was a huge challenge – the dominoes kept falling over. But I didn’t give up, never lost hope, was encouraged by others, and in the end, I succeeded."
That was exactly the goal of the day: to experience the
accadis ISB values in a new way. Helping each other (Service), considering and supporting one another (Compassion), never giving up (Ambition), and putting in effort with passion (Dedication). For this special day, Dr. Stefan Wolkenfeld introduced an additional value: Patience.
How do we deal with setbacks? How do we celebrate success together? How do we plan and execute a project that can only succeed as a team? Through this experience, students learned valuable lessons that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Parent Teacher Association Support Made It Possible
Without 40,000 dominoes, this unique day would not have been possible. A huge thank you goes to the PTA who covered the cost of renting the dominoes. Thanks to their support, students were not only able to demonstrate their construction skills, but also gain valuable personal development experience.
Domino Day at accadis ISB was much more than just a fun event – it was an opportunity to strengthen creativity, teamwork, and patience while bringing the accadis values to life. These values will accompany our students not only on this day, but throughout their lives.
